Dear DG,
This summer I was blessed with the most AMAZING opportunity to work with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind as a part of Delta Gamma’s Hope Serving trip. Among 7 other Delta Gammas from all over the country, we served as a camp volunteer/sight guide for kids ages 6-15.
These kids were the happiest kids I have ever worked with. No matter what level of sight impairment they may have had, it did not stop them from anything. We took the kids to the Toronto zoo, an amusement park, hiking, boating, etc. All of these things you would think would have restricted these kids because of their sight loss, but that was far from true.
I have learned so much about myself, Delta Gamma, service for sight, & sight loss throughout this trip. These kids took what others look at as a disability and flipped it completely. They don’t look at sight loss as a burden or something to define them as. The youngest girl here was 6 years old with almost complete sight loss, and she did not have a fear in the world (besides the snake she pet at the zoo). I never would imagined I could learn so much from someone so young.
These kids have touched my heart. They are so brave and courageous and I am forever grateful for this experience. I could not have done any of this without Delta Gamma or the support from my sisters. So thank you GE for helping me get to where I am today.
