It's safe to say we've all made our way onto Bama Rush TikTok within the past month. It's gotten everyone in the recruitment spirit, even if you're 20 years out of college. We thought now would be a good time to give PNMs (potential new members) a few easy tips to prepare for sorority recruitment!
1. Do Your Research
It's a good idea to do some digging on your university's sororities. Figure out which chapters are active on campus, what their philanthropies are, what they're known for, and so on. Visit the sorority's website, and do a search of their social media accounts. After a few minutes of looking, you'll be able to get a general vibe of each chapter. See what other sisters are commenting on their chapter's social media pages, the photos they're tagged in, and the types of photos the chapter posts. Social media definitely isn't the only thing you should use to judge each sorority, but it is helpful for getting a general feeling about each chapter before you meet them during recruitment.
2. Write Down the Schedule
As soon as you've registered for recruitment and get the schedule of dates, write them down and clear any other plans! Each round is mandatory unless you have a valid and accepted excuse, and you risk being removed from the process if you don't show up. Even though there's always a chance you don't get called back to a chapter, clear your schedule to prepare in advance and avoid any potential difficulties.
3. Plan Your Outfits
Your recruitment group leader should provide some information in regards to how you should dress for each round. It's important that regardless of the theme or dress code, you look your best! Putting in the extra effort to look presentable and put together will go a long way in increasing your confidence and comfort. Also, don't be afraid to express yourself with a piece of statement jewelry or a pair of shoes you've been saving for the perfect occasion!
4. Prepare Questions and Conversation Points
Much of the sorority recruitment process is about the conversations you have with sorority women as a PNM. This is your opportunity to get to know the women in each chapter and start to forge genuine connections. The women you talk to will be ready to answer your questions and give you information about their chapter, so come prepared with some questions to ask them! Reflect on what's important to you in joining a sorority: philanthropy, community involvement, social life, career development, etc. By asking specific questions and listening to the stories the sorority women have to share, you'll be able to get a true sense of who you might connect with best in joining a sorority.
5. Keep An Open Mind
We know, you've probably heard this piece of advice a thousand times! But it's true. We all know that nothing is guaranteed in the recruitment process, so it's best not to place your hopes and dreams into one basket. Try your best to go into recruitment with an open mind and the goal of finding where you may feel most at home. We know it's natural to have favorites in the process but keep in mind that every chapter you speak to is so excited to have you there. You never know what amazing experiences you may have if you release expectations and flow through recruitment with an open mind!
