Anchor Cheer 2022

This past Sunday we were excited to finally host our first Anchor Cheer in person after the Covid-19 pandemic. After months of training, all the Greek life participants came together for this day-long event to show off their hard work. Within the MAC, friends, and family went wild to see all the amazing cheers that were performed.

We had our panel of judges which consisted of Alumna, Liv Boyan; Bob Springer from the Kent Lions Club; Cleveland Sight Center’s Leisure and Lifestyle Service Manager, Bobbie Szabo; Kent State 2021 Homecoming King, Andrew Pitko and finally, the winner of the guest judge competition, Matt Bell from Sigma Chi.

With that, we had a ranking based on the judge's scores at the event, but also all of the fundraising and social challenges that happened the week before. Each chapter that participated in these events and challenges gained a certain amount of points if they placed in the overall top third each day. Adding all the points together, along with the awesome cheers that were performed, put Sigma Chi in first place. Following them was Kappa Sigma in second place and Alpha Sigma in third.

At the end of the day, we were able to raise over $20,000 for our philanthropy, Service for Sight, which made the overall experience very rewarding and fun.

Vice President of Foundation, Izzy Leone, worked long and hard hours to put together this amazing event and shared her thoughts on how the experience went for her:

"Anchor Cheer was the most rewarding experience I’ve had thus far in Delta Gamma! We haven’t been able to have a traditional philanthropy fundraiser since 2019, since 2020 Anchor Cheer was scheduled right when we went on lockdown. I think the momentum of not being able to have a Greek-life-wide philanthropy event added to the excitement and competitiveness of it. I’ve never planned such a big event either, Anchor Cheer had 18 teams consisting of 350 participants collectively. Leading up to Anchor Cheer, I saw how much work the coaches and teams put in. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was amazed! Sitting at Anchor Cheer with my advisor, Heather Ingalls, we couldn’t believe how well the team's performances came together. The exciting atmosphere at the MACC that Sunday gave me instant gratification, I knew all my hard work had paid off. My chapter ended up raising almost twenty-two thousand dollars for Service for Sight! I think it’s safe to say we raised a good chunk of change, and also had a lot of fun doing so."

Charles Purcell, Kappa Sigma participant, added his thoughts about his own experience participating in DG's Anchor Cheer event:

"It was a movie. I felt like the main character."

All the time and effort that was put into that amazing day was well deserved, and we can’t wait to see what's in store for next year!
