On April 15, Gamma Epsilon held our annual philanthropy event, Anchor Cheer. We look forward to this yearly event that's unique to our chapter and that enables us to raise money for Service for Sight, which is at the center of our mission to Do Good as a Delta Gamma.
For those of you who don't know what Anchor Cheer is, it's essentially a cheer competition open to participation from all of Greek Life here at Kent State. Anywhere from one to five Delta Gammas are delegated as coaches to each participating team. For weeks leading up to the event, the teams meet multiple times a week to choreograph a dance, philanthropy-related cheer, and Delta Gamma chant. Not only is the event itself a blast, but we have fun making connections and having fun with other Greek Life chapters in the weeks leading up to the performance.
At the event, teams gain points through their individual fundraising efforts and performance. Many teams opted to hold their own fundraising events prior to Anchor Cheer, such as holding a "Dine to Donate" at local restaurants or involving their own chapter members to fundraise. This helped supplement the fundraising our sisters did as well.
We are so happy and grateful to announce that our chapter successfully raised over $20,000 for Service for Sight this spring through Anchor Cheer! It's empowering to our chapter, our Greek Life community, and our organization as a whole to have had so many people help us achieve this goal.
Our chapter would especially love to shout out the three women who helped organize this whole event: Kelly Owens (vp: Foundation), Alexis Kunovich (director of Anchor Cheer), and Hannah Pierosh (director of Anchor Cheer). We know it wasn't easy, but we can confidently say it was successful, thanks to their efforts! Here's what each of them had to say about the event:
"Being a big part of planning Anchor Cheer was nothing less but one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I got so lucky to have Hannah Pierosh and Alexis Kunovich by my side, making it an event where we were able to raise 20,000 dollars for Service for Sight! When I first started planning Anchor Cheer, I had many nerves and doubts, but as I continued on, I learned to realize that I really do enjoy putting on events like Dip Games and preparing bows and bandanas for our Greek Life teams. One reason I feel so lucky to be in this position is that I got to meet many new faces from the Cleveland Sight Center, which is where a big part of our proceeds go. I truly think it makes it so much more special to have a connection and be able to see firsthand where all our fundraising benefits our local community. My main goal in life is to at least impact one individual's life, and I know being able to be a big part of our sorority's philanthropy will help me reach that goal!"
- Kelly Owens, vp: Foundation
"I had a lot of fun planning it! There was a lot of time that when into planning the whole thing, and we were doing so much to prepare for it that I wasn't completely sure how it would all come together. On that day, everything fell into place, and so many people told me how much fun they had. I couldn't help but smile that day and watch everything come together. I am so happy I got to be a part of something as special and important as this and raising money for something our entire chapter is passionate about."
- Alexis Kunovich, director of Anchor Cheer
"Being able to put together such an amazing event was truly quite an experience. There were many ups and downs and late nights during this whole process. It was all worth it. Seeing it all come together made me feel like I can accomplish anything. It would not have been the same if I didn’t have the people I was working with by my side. Kelly, Alexis, and I started working on this event in January, and it ended up being a very rewarding process. Kelly and I both got lauved by our bigs on the day of Anchor Cheer, and it couldn’t have happened at a better time or place. Overall, events like these help to bring our chapter and others closer together and go to show that we are all supportive of each other and are involved in the community."
- Hannah Pierosh, director of Anchor Cheer
